How often does VR change the surgical plan?

68 studies in the library address this question.

Short answer

Studies in the library report that viewing the 3D model changed the plan in anywhere from about 3% to 75% of cases. Higher rates came from complex cases, such as congenital heart defects (68%, Lippert 2024), children with congenital malformations or tumours (75%, Pelizzo 2025), segmentectomy (52%, Bakhuis 2023), and robotic prostatectomy (32%, Shirk 2022). Lower rates came from routine neurosurgical cases (3 of 107, Colombo 2023). The studies report how often plans changed; none shows that the changes led to better patient outcomes.
