Realize Medical

About us

Leaders in immersive 3D VR technology.

From hospital research lab to global innovation

Realize Medical was not born in a tech incubator — it was conceived inside a hospital.

Founded by two medical physicists — Justin Sutherland and Dan La Russa — the company began as Realize Lab, a research initiative exploring how emerging virtual reality technologies could improve medical image processing and clinical workflows.

In early 2018, while most healthcare institutions were still treating VR as experimental, Justin and Dan saw an opportunity to fundamentally change how clinicians interact with medical imaging. They began developing a VR-first image processing system rooted in advanced 3D modeling and simulation — a platform that allowed physicians to engage with anatomy spatially, intuitively, and collaboratively.

Reimagining medical imaging through virtual reality

Traditional imaging confines clinicians to flat screens and fragmented views.

Realize Medical was founded on a different belief: that surgical planning should mirror how physicians think — in 3D.

By combining volumetric imaging data with immersive interaction, early platforms demonstrated that VR surgical planning could streamline segmentation, improve anatomical comprehension, and strengthen collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. What began as research quickly evolved into a scalable solution designed for clinical precision and workflow integration.
